Description |
1952 Centennial - This photo, according to the notation on the back, was taken in July of 1952 when Berne celebrated its centennial. It reads, "Centennial, 1952 Same house gone also building gone by railroad that used to house Dr. Lehman's office and at one time a barber shop." The picture shows a hay wagon being pulled by a tractor. The wagon has been decorated with red, white and blue bunting and two ladies in long dresses and sunbonnets sit at the front. A cow, and I think it's a real cow, stands behind them with her head in stanchions that would have been used as she was being milked. Behind the cow stands a man in overalls with a young boy wearing shorts and a t-shirt. The driver of the tractor is wearing overalls and a striped "train engineers" cap. Two building can be seen on the other side of the wagon and tractor. One has a tin foorf over a porch that has been decorated with red, white and blue bunting that has a single star in the center surrounded by other stars. The house next to it is a white, clapboard sided house with a porch turret that is capped with a conical roof. A red, white and blue banner similar to the one seen on the house next door, decorates the porch roofline and there is a small, oval sign that sticks out from the porch which says, "Beauty Shop". A duplicate of this photo is labeled on the back "Daisy Ashliman and Mrs. Herman Fosnaugh. Sam Nussbaum home in background, it's gone." |
