1939 Exhibition Picture - This picture of a nun was taken at the Berne Studio of Berne, Adams Co., IN in 1938 or 1939. The picture was then accepted for exhibition at the 1939 Indiana Assoc. of Photographers Convention in Indianapolis. Jacob Gerber was the photographer and the owner of the Berne Studio. The picture shows a young woman sitting for the photographer in a nun's habit. The picture is black and white, but I assume the clothing she is wearing, which is very dark, was probably black. She is wearing a white bandeau with a black veil attached to it. Her hair is parted in the center and tucked completely under the veil. Her dress has a white collar and an elbow length cape over long sleeves that have white, celluloid cuffs fastened with cuff links that have a red cross on them. This probably indicates that she is in the medical profession. She is also wearing a Red Cross necklace on a long chain withe a banner like at the top that has something written in Latin. The photo is mounted on a cork pattern border that is then mounted on a thick, cream colored poster board. "The Berne Studio" logo is handwritten in black ink in the lower right hand corner. In the lower left hand corner is a dark blue and gold tag stamped with "ACCEPTED FOR EXHIBITION" and has a circle with the Indiana Assoc. of Photographers, under which is "1939 CONVENTION". Under this it says "Indianapolis". On the back of the photo, handwritten in black ink is, "The Berne Studio 505 E. Franklin St. Berne Ind. Jacob Gerber". |
