Jefferson High School Warriors - This is a photo of the Jefferson High School Warriors basketball team in the early 1950s. They are posing for the camera in their uniforms, which consist of shiny shorts and tank tops with striped trim around the armholes and neck. They are all wearing hight topped, lace-up, canvas basketball shoes. They appear to have had this picture taken during a game. Behind them you can see a raised set of bleachers with men sitting in them. You can only see their legs and feet, but why would they be there during the school day? So, I think we can assume this was taken during a game. On the back of the photo is "L. Anspaugh Studio Corner First & Monroe Sts. Decatur, Indiana". So we know he was the photographer. Someone has written the names of the players in blue ink. I'm assuming they are identifying from left to right. Front Row: Carl Spangler; Howard Miller; Bryce Christy; Joyce Smitley; Marion DeBolt. Second Row: Jack Wendel; Eugene Wellman; Darrel Kuhn; Don Brandt; Melvin Wall. The person who did the identification guessed that the picture was taken between 1950 - 1952, but I looked in the Jefferson Twp. yearbook for 1950 and found that four of these guys graduated in 1950, so this picture was taken during the 1949-1950 school year. Bryce Christy, Marion DeBolt, Eugene Wellman and Melvin Wall all graduated in the spring of 1950. The identifier also wrote "Jefferson H.S. Warriors Adams County, IN". The name "Melvin" is also found in the upper left hand corner, making me believe this might be Melvin's copy of the picture. The coach is not identified, but the Jeffersonian 1950 yearbook identified him as Claren Neuenschwander. |
