  1. 1942 Berne High School Band - 1942

This 1942 Berne High School Band picture was taken in the Berne High School gym, now the Berne Elementary School (October 2008). Pictured are 55 band members and director Freeman Burkhalter, dressed in a white uniform. Most band members have band uniforms with ties. They also have epaulets with shoulder cords on their left shoulders. The other girls not wearing uniforms are wearing dark tops. Some of those girls have white collars. Some hav...

  2. 8th Grade Class Photo - 1941

8th Grade Class Photo - This is a photographer's photo of the 8th graders at Berne High School in 1941. They are posed in front of the school. Someone has pointed out Delbert Sprunger (second from left) and Irene Zuercher (fourth from right) in the front row. Delbert and Irene eventually married. It's a good picture of the school building. You can see the brick construction and how the entrance once looked and the doors used. The girls in t...

  3. About 1928 with Ernst Yost - 1928

About 1928 with Ernst Yost - This photo shows two adults and 3 children posing outside a house covered in asbestos shingles. This looks like the same house in several other pictures in this group. The house is small and has a tin roof and small front porch. There is an addition to the side that has a covered entryway with small railing. Someone has written on the back of the photo " about 1928 with Ernst Yost". I believe this to be Ida (Bach...

  5. Accordion Shop Float - 1952 - 1952

Accordion Shop Float - 1952 - This picture was taken during the Berne Centennial in 1952. Although it is not identified, I know from seeing other pictures of them that the man standing on the ground next to the float is Chris (Criegel) Zuercher. The man standing on the float on the left side is Walter, Chris's son, the woman is Irene, Chris's daughter and the man on the right may be Sylvan, also Chris's son. The float has the store's name all ...

  6. at Ben Linniger West of Decatur - 1935

at Ben Linniger West of Decatur - This picture shows a gorup of adults and children posed in front of a white clapboard house with a tree shading it and a wire fence surrounding it. The people are not identified, but because I have done so many of these family pictures, I know the children are: Walter, Sylvan and Irene Zuercher. Their mother Ida (Bachofen) Zuercher is standing in the center wearing a sleeveless, print dress with a white collar...

Chris and Idad (Bachenhof) Zuercher's 30th Anniversary - This is a photo that was taken of the Zuercher family at the time that they were celebrating Chris and Ida's 30th wedding anniversary. Chris and Ida are seated behind a table that is holding lit candles and what appears to be a small version of a wedding cake. Walter and his wife are standing on the left. 9. Ed Beer and Zuerchers - 1929

Ed Beer and Zuerchers - This picture is of a group of people posed next to a car in front of what looks like a school building. Someone has written on the back in black ink, "Ed Beers & us 1929". Evidently Ed Beer is the man seated on the running board and his wife is the heavy set woman standing next to Ida. The car looks like a Ford Model A. The women are wearing low waisted dresses and cloche hats that were popular during the late 20s earl...

Irene 1932-1933 - This picture of "Irene" is of Irene (Zuercher) Sprunger. She is standing next to a house covered in asbestos shingles and surrounded with plants and flowers of all types. She is wearing a knee length dress with long sleeves, a Peter Pan collar with a huge bow at the throat and striped anklets with Mary Jane shoes. Her bobbed hair and round wire rimmed glasses make her look like Buster Brown.

  12. Irene Zuercher

Irene Zuercher - This photo of Irene was taken when she was about 14 years old, from the looks of her. She is wearing dark dress with a square neckline that is trimmed with a yoke and ruffle of dotted Swiss fabric. The sleeves are gathered at the shoulder and slightly full and it looks like they are elbow length and cuffed with the same dotted Swiss material. There is a bow at the throat of what looks like velvet. Irene's hair is chin length ...

  13. Irene Zuercher in 1929 - 1929

Irene Zuercher in 1929 - This picture of a little girl standing on the running board of a big old car has "Me about 1929" written on the back of it. I can only assume that "Me" is Irene (Zuercher) Sprunger. The car appears to be a 1928-1929 Ford Model A, but the grill doesn't look right according the pictures I've seen of the car on the internet. I can't make out the car's logo at the top of the grill.

  15. Irene (Zuercher) Sprunger's Accordion Band

Irene (Zuercher) Sprunger's Accordion Band - This is a photo of Irene with her accordion students. It looks like it was taken in the late 50s or early 60s. All the girls are wearing full length white dresses and the three boys are wearing dark suits. They are posed in front of drapes and on a cement floor. They are all holding their accordions. I believe these students may have taken their lessons from Irene at the Zuercher Accordion Shop.

It shows Irene behind a counter on the right side of the photo, with her father Christian or Chris in the middle and her brother Walter in the front. Emil and Walter are both playing accordions, while Sylvan is holding a clarinet and Irene a violin. They are posed in the front yard of their house but with their backs to the street out front. You can see a factory across the street and a wooden building that may or may not be a house. There are also two cars parked in front of the ho...

Reuben Liechty, Ernst Yost and the Zuerchers - This photo shows a group of children and adults gathered around a picnic table in what looks like a motor court. These motor courts were common in the 20s and 30s as people began to travel more with their cars. In the right rear of the picture you can see a small cottage with a car parked in front of it. There is another on the far left of the photo. The group at the picnic table has their car pa...
